Geocache Description:

Styles to cross, public path, can be muddy

Small sandwich box, placed along public right of way, which can be taken in on a 8 mile/13 km circular walk from the South Park Darlington ( easy going fairly level ).HELL KETTLES are not well seen from the cache location and access is currently barred but they are two ponds said to have origanated in 1179 AD. Formed due to the subsidence of underlying Magnesian Limestone, the only such water feature in County Durham fed by calcareous springs. The area is now designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, contains a rich asemblage of rare and local wetland plants. A wealth of knowledge awaits you if you use your search engine to find HELL KETTLES ( Croft on Tees )including an eye witness account of them forming.
