Tonjes Havekost, one of Fidalgo Island's earliest pioneers, magnanimously donated most of the acreage that is now included in Washington Park. He stated "Make my cemetery a park for everybody", and today a monument stands near where he was buried. This monument has been placed above a beautiful headland that overlooks Burrows Channel and the island with the same name. It is capped by a polished rock sphere, and is easily identified from the paved byway, just north and below the magnificent view at the high point of this byway.
The Havekost Headland cache has been placed in a location close to a beautiful south-facing headland, and can best be reached over public lands starting at a trail post 75 feet below the monument. Turn left and proceed down the trail to a trail fork; thence proceed right and continue down step short switchbacks. This trail is slippery during the rainy season. The cache is a few feet off the trail.
There use to be a shorter route, but it now gated with "No Trespassing" signs. Please respect these property rights, and avoid this route.
The cache is a 2"X3" tan plastic container. Please replace cache and surrounding material exactly as you found it.
