Elk Creek's Haunted Wayside on the YST Traditional Cache
zuma!: Archiving this one as there seems to be too many muggles here for an ammo can. Will replace with a new cache, new hide, slightly new location.

From Eau Claire, the Yellowstone Trail went west to Menomonie on
what is now highway E. The bridge across the Elk Creek has recently
been removed, and the highway rerouted to the south of the lake
(though Mapquest does not know this yet). The highway wayside is
now on a neglected dead end, with a fantastic view of the lake, the
creek and the Elk Creek Lake Dam. Watch your step here because it
is a long way down.
According to a cheesy book, called Wisconsin's Haunted Places, this
wayside is said to be haunted by the ghost of "Mary."
People say they see a girl in her 20's wearing a pink angora
sweater and white capri pants haunting this wayside. According to
the book, there was a Mary who was hitchhiking from Minneapolis to
Chicago, whose body was found near here in the 1970s. The crime was
never solved.
This is one of several caches I have placed along the route of the
historic Yellowstone Trail. The trail is a historic motor route
that went across Wisconsin from 1918 to 1930. The Wisconsin portion
of the Yellowstone Trail is 406 miles long, starting at the state
line south of Kenosha and going north, and then west to Hudson.
The Wisconsin segment is just a part of one of America’s first
transcontinental auto routes, a 3,754-mile long road that started
in Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts and went to Puget Sound,
Washington. More information on the Yellowstone Trail, including
maps can be found at
