Geocache Description:

You can drive to within 5 metres of this cache.

Saldanha Bay started as a small fishing village. It is situated on the Saldanha/Langebaan lagoon approximetly 120km North of Cape Town. About 30 years ago it was transformed into a deep water port and became one of the worlds leading ports in the export of Iron ore. Large Cape Size bulk carriers can been seen entering and leaving the port on a regular basis. During this transformation it remained a popular fishing harbour. As the harbour was situated on the end of the Saldanha Sishen railway line, a modern Steel Mill was erected in Saldanha about 10 years ago. Marcus Island which is situated on the Northern side of the harbour entrace did not pose a problem to shipping, but the space between the Island and the northern main land allowed the Westerly swells into the bay resulting in the large vessels on the Iron Ore jetty surging and breaking mooring lines. A land reclaiming project was done and a breakwater was established between the Island and the mainland. This in turn presented other ecological problems. Cats from the mainland crossed onto the Island and killed the bird life and beach errosion in Langebaan began. The cat problem was solved by a wall which was erected across the reclaimed breakwater. A project was started in 2003 to stop the erosion of the beaches in Langebaan and is presently still under construction.
