Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in a wooded area next to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Parking is available. There are 2 trails into the hiding spot, however, the area is overgrown so you may need to bushwhack a little (10 ft maybe)if you come in the summer. There is room for small trade items. Please hide the container back as good or better than you found it. PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL 4 CORNERS OF THE CONTAINER SNAP SHUT BEFORE YOU RE-HIDE IT! The canopy is thick so reception may be bad. BYOP.

This cache is located at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, a small stone church on Lyons View Drive which serves an African-American congregation. It was established in 1887 and rebuilt in 1943. The earliest record of the cemetery in the Knox County records, however, in 1886.

I find the architecture of the building facinating because it is so out of place with the urban sprawl of this area. The mere fact that some developer has not tried (or been able to) to snap up the property is probably a testament to the congregation's staying power.

The cemetery is no longer used (the last burial was in 1971) and is in poor condition. Maintenance is limited to grass cutting. Many graves are sunken. About 25 percent of the area along the south side has been allowed to revert to brush. In the summer it is almost impossible to see the markers within this area. Probably only about 30 percent of all graves here have readable markers.

The cache is hidden in the wooded part of the cemetery. As stated above, the wooded part is part of the cemetery and has been allowed to over grow. There are many headstones in the wooded area, so be careful and don't trip over them.
