Geocache Description:

The Soldier's Road

A forced march down an old military road.

Most military roads in Scotland are attributed to General Wade, where in fact his successor, Major William Caulfeild constructed many more. This road, from Dumbarton to Inverary, is a “Caulfeild Road”

Construction was ordered in 1743 with work commencing in 1745. It was not until 1749 that it was completed, with work continuing throughout the 1745 Uprising.

Some things, however, never change and in 1763 the traffic cones were out and temporary traffic lamps were in operation as repairs were carried out by The 32nd Foot, The Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (who became known as the Yellowjackets?)

This cache is hidden near to one of the few remaining stretches of this impressive road.
