Stillwater Tiger6 Traditional Cache

Located off the Stillwater Farm trail at the intersection of routes 140 and 62 in Sterling, MA. The terrain is hilly and rocky, and the lower portions of the trail may be wet is the spring or fall.
The Stillwater Farm was originally settled in 1790 by Zebedee Redding, a Revolutionary War veteran. The site was a working farm for nearly 200 years, and was purchased by the MDC in the early 1990s for watershed protection.
The farmhouse is now managed as an historical and educational site. The Stillwater Farm Interpretive Trail is located on adjoining public land administered by the MDC. The trail, which brings you through several habitat types in its brief .8 mile length, demonstrates the succession of forest growth and human effects on the environment. It's a cool place!
As you start your hike you'll see several old pieces of farm machinery, fun for kids to explore. Soon you enter the woods and begin climbing on the faint trail. After a bit of a walk you'll reach a spot where you can see evidence of the 1938 hurricane. As you continue, you'll soon ascend the steepest part of the trail, then traverse the hill to arrive at a series of boulder ledges. This is the "summit" of the hike at 640 feet above sea level, and it's another fun spot to explore. Stop for a snack and sit still; the woods are fairly open here and there are a lot of deer in the area. Maybe you'll see one.
From this point on it's all downhill. Watch your step on the rocky trail, it can be slippery when wet or leaf -covered. Keep an eye out for the big flat-topped glacial erratic about halfway down the hill. After passing through an area that holds water in the spring and fall, the trail brings you back to the open field where you started your hike.
The cache is a large ammo box placed by Tiger Den 6 of Cub Scout Pack 34 in Sterling. We're tracking travel bugs that pass through the cache. We hope you enjoy this special place in our town.
Good luck! For an awesome breakfast, stop in the Over Easy Cafe just down the road (German omelet is our favorite) and say 'hi' to Robin and the crew.
