Geocache Description:

The cache is situated near the Claerwen dam,the largest in the Elan valley and the last one to be built.

Lara4 placed this cache in september but they cannot get back enough to keep an eye on it so i have taken it over. The cache is a 2ltr tuppaware box with the usual goodies.
The top end of the Elan valley is a very wild place but very beautiful and desolate. There is a path which runs all the way to Strata florida abbey called the monks trod which has some wonderful scenery on the way,it must have been a hard life in the winter up here and to walk without all the right waterproof gear must have been very hard for the monks.
There are some nice waterfalls around the area which are worth a visit especially the one on the river which comes out of the claerwen about a mile before the dam at N52 15.067 W003 38.217,please be careful as it could be dangerous and there are warning signs as there have been accidents here.

The Queen opened the dam in 1952 and it was her first public engagement. The dam holds 48,300 megalitres and the Elan valley recieves about 2m of rain per year.

Click here for info on the Elan valley

There seems to be some confusion over how to get to this cache so here are a few tips, drive over the dam and park your car then walk west along path up hill then take the path back east onto the level ground and drop down to the cache! G:UK cache rating
