Geocache Description:

This is a small container located in Reservoir Park in Harrisburg, PA. The cache is used to represent Earth in the “Voyage Through The Solar System” cache (Waypoint GCR3WK). The cache is a small Tupperware container hidden from view. The park is open from dawn to dusk, with posted hours of 6 AM until 10 PM.

Earth is our home planet, and the perspective we get living on Earth is that our planet is big and sturdy with an endless ocean of air. During the Voyage Through The Solar System, you will get a much different perspective. From space you get the impression that the Earth is small with a thin, fragile layer of atmosphere. The distinguishing Earth features are the blue waters, brown and green land masses and white clouds set against the black background of space.

Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life. Our planet's rapid spin and molten nickel-iron core give rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere, shields us from nearly all of the harmful radiation coming from the Sun and other stars. Earth's atmosphere protects us from meteors, most of which burn up before they can strike the surface.

Earth is located 92,957,130 miles from the sun. It has a diameter of 7,926 miles. It takes 8.33 minutes for the light from the sun to reach Earth. In our imaginary voyage through the Solar System, the dome of the Pennsylvania State Capital Building which is 76 feet in diameter would represent the Sun. If you take the paved walkway a little further west of the cache location you can see the Dome. This will be the last chance to view the Dome during the rest of your voyage. The size and distance from the cache to the State Capital Dome would be a close approximation to this scale model of the sun. Earth would be about 8.4 inches in diameter which would be about the size of a soccer ball.

Because of the limitations on hiding caches, the exact distance between the Capital Dome and the cache may be off slightly. I made the best effort to find a place as close to the calculated scaled distance as I was able.
(visit link) was used to find the scaling data for this cache. For more information on the Solar System see (visit link)

The Cache has some trade items that have an Earth theme. It will hold small trade items and Travel Bugs. I have included a small globe of the earth for the FTF. As this may be a high muggle area, when replacing the cache try to replace as well or better than you found it.

If you are going to take the Voyage Through The Solar System, make sure you write down the code number from the log sheet.

You may want to visit the Civil War Museum while you are here. Take note of the large American Flag as it can be used as a reference point when you visit Mars. The Capital Dome will not be visible from the rest of the Planets.

Now let’s continue your Voyage to the forth planet, Mars.
