Geocache Description:

PRATT TRUSS BRIDGE This cache is on a cool old piece of history. I have rated the terrain a 1 1/2 because you have to go over a guard rail to access the cache. While looking for this cache, be be sure to revive your inner child, and spit into the steam.

In 1912-13 the Joliet Bridge and Iron Company of Joliet, Illinois built this bridge. The final payment for this 125' long Pratt truss bridge was made to Joliet on May 6, 1913.

In 1913 the bridge was incorporated as part of the SLO Coastal Highway. This road followed much of the route laid out by road engineers in 1912 that was initially pioneered by Portola and deAnza in the 18th century. By 1926 various improvements had been made and the grade crossing over the Southern APcific Railroad near the bridge had been removed. Furter straightening of the highway bypassed the Bello Street Bridge. The bridge was abandoned by the state in 1926 and became part of the SLO county road system.

Between 1926-33 the bridge was utilized as a part of the local Pismo Beach Road system It served as a connection between Bello Street and Frady Lane over Pismo Creek. By the latter part of that period, the bridge was restricted to foot, horse and bicycle traffic.

On June 10, 1973 the bridge was posted "CLOSED" by the order of CALTRANS and has remained closed since that date.

PLEASE replace the belt BETWEEN the magnets (note the blue tape on the bottom) so that they can fully contact the steel. Also, be sure to replace the strap with the buckle on the lid, AWAY from the magnets, that way the magnets make contact with the bridge.
