In 1958 when I was eight years old my Grandfather and grandmother brought me out to the valley below the cache for a picnic. As I remember it there were stands of willow trees then. After lunch my grandfather brought me to the top of the knoll on the other side of the fence [there were no fences in 1958]. He showed me an old grave stone on the knoll. The name reads John Helm 1873. As we sat by the grave my grandfather began to explain to me what it must have been like here in 1873 and who John Helm might have been. Now let me tell you my Grandfather was an unparalleled story teller. He was born in Minnesota on a remote farm in a German community. Story telling was an art form to him. Anyway as I sat there bug eyed I could see the Indians and Cowboys on the plain below in my imagination. The story and the grave made such an impression that I never forgot. Now I'm sharing this forgotten site with you. I suppose not one person in 5,000 that drive by here know of John Helms resting place. I like to think that he was a Cowboy that worked cattle for the Warners Ranch.
The cache is placed on the Public right of way. I have provided a pic so that you will not need to enter the VID property.
