Introduction

This is my second "Picture Puzzle" style of cache. It will lead you to a number of beautiful historic churches around the St Kilda area. I given this cache a terrain=2 rating because of the distances covered. All locations are on flat ground.

The initial co-ordinates will put you at an intersection in the general vicinity of the visual clues. Apart from a Milk Bar which can provide some refreshments, there is nothing relevant at this location.

Melways Map 2P shows an area bounded very roughly by Dandenong Rd to the north, Barkly St to the west, Hotham St to the east and the intersection of Brighton Rd and Chapel St to the south. Within Melways Map 2P there are quite a number of "Places of Worship". I have chosen eight of the more historically significant churches in this area and photographed a unique aspect of each building. These photos are shown below.

In order to find this cache you will have to find these eight churches, identify which photo belongs to which church and derive a partial coordinate from its location.

The picture clues are not shown in any particular order and the church locations surround the initial published coordinates. Some clues are fairly obvious, but others may be a little more tricky so you will have to be observant.

Your task is to

  • visit each church depicted in these photos
  • identify the relevant letter under the photo for the church you are looking at
  • stand on the kerb edge of the footpath (next to the gutter) directly in front of the centre of the building
  • obtain a position reading using your GPS
  • fill in the following table substituting the lowercase letters with a digit from your GPS coordinates
Photo
Letter
Kerb
Latitude
Kerb
Longitude
A S 37 --.a-- E 144 --.j--
B S 37 --.b-- E 144 --.k--
C S 37 --.c-- E 144 --.m--
D S 37 --.d-- E 144 --.n--
E S 37 --.e-- E 144 --.p--
F S 37 --.f-- E 144 --.q--
G S 37 --.g-- E 144 --.r--
H S 37 --.h-- E 144 --.s--

Once you have assigned a number to each lowercase letter in the table, proceed with the usual calculations to arrive at the final cache location. The cache is located within 5km of the initial published coordinates as the crow flies.

Calculations

The following uppercase letters are not related to the photo identifiers above.
A = n - d + 2
B = j - q - 1
C = s + a - 5
D = c + m - 4
E = g - k + 2

F = b + e - 2
G = f - r
H = h + p - 10
J = d + s - 11
K = s - c
L = c + d
