This is the first letterbox hybrid in Bournemouth! It is also a book swap cache, so please feel free to bring a book of your own and exchange it for one of ours. No other swaps except travel bugs etc., please.
Tuckton (west of Christchurch) has grown up around the lowest bridging point on the River Stour, but perhaps inevitably the original village has pretty well disappeared under the expansion of Bournemouth.
The water works, built in 1857 have an unlikely literary connection. 30 Russian political refugees sought by the Tsarist police, including Tolstoy's grandson, and headed by the author's literary agent and later executor, Count Vladimir Tcherktov, took over the water works as a printing works in 1897. Until 1908 they printed (in Russian) the works of Tolstoy, which were forbidden in Russia, especially his then controversial novel 'Resurrection', then smuggled them back into Russia at great risk to themselves. They called themselves the Free Age Press, as a blue plaque on the water works records.
Instructions:
Park at N50' 43.965 W001' 47.727 outside the Southbourne Tennis Club. The trail starts at N50' 43.936 W001' 47.705, just outside the printing works. From here you can see the aforementioned blue plaque.
Starting from the righthand gatepost, walk along the pavement on a bearing of 168 degrees, following the curve of the road, for 428 paces.
Now take a bearing of 32 degrees down the small path. At the bottom of the slope there are two trees on your right overhanging the river, about 6 feet apart. Follow the path for 95 paces from the second tree. On the left there is a fairly steep slope. The cache is in a green ammo box underneath a fallen tree. The cache needs to be concealed on both the top and the bottom, but please lift it up from the top.
