Geocache Description:

Seven geocaches have been placed in Dayton Cyn by Kurious Kate and Lady Lamont to supplement your hiking and geocaching pleasure with some knowledge about the early local native Americans. Fire in Sept 2005 ravaged this area but don't despair! Some caches survived and the others have been replaced. Look for AGUA OBSCURA, CHUMASH CAVE, NICHE NESTLER, ROCKY ROAD, SAVORY SAGE, SEARED SUMAC, and SUPER STAPLE. Notice they are listed alphabetically; you determine their order for seeking.

Development in the lower end of the canyon complicates access, so begin your search by parking on Woolsey Cyn Rd at N 34° 14.092 W 118° 39.546. If you are reluctant to retrace your path, team up with a geobuddy, park a vehicle near Roscoe and Valley Circle Blvds, and shuttle to the top. When you finish your hike, leave the area by way of a bulldozed road just above the chain link fence that runs east/west from Valley Circle Blvd. The road exits opposite the Deerlick Rd sign which you will see on the east side of Valley Circle Blvd.
SYCAMORE SANCTUARY was badly scorched but replaced after the fire. Now, however, it is surrounded on all sides by poison oak, so it has been archived. COVERED IN CHOCOLATE was one of the fire victims and has been archived; SEARED SUMAC takes its place.
The Sumac plant family includes several species which are native to the chaparral: Lemonadeberry, Laurel Sumac, Sugar Bush, Squaw Bush, and Poison Oak. The first three are evergreen bushes which range from 5 to 15 feet in height, while the latter two are deciduous and shrubby or vine-like. A bit of plant trivia--cashews and mangoes are also in this family. The native American Chumash made a beverage from the berries of some of these plants by soaking the fruit in water or drying and grinding the berries before steeping.
SEARED SUMAC is a camouflaged (guess what color . . .) pill bottle containing a few small trade items and a FTF CA quarter.
