Here is a great view of the impressive WLW 747 foot Blaw Knox tower erected in 1928 for the Crosley Corporation. In fact, this is as close as most people will get to this tower. The station operates on 700 khz using the call sign WLW ("Whata-Lotta-Watts"). From 1934 through 1939 the station operated at 500,000 watts. I have heard that the owner, Powell Crosley, who was also in the radio building business, once said it was cheaper to run all that power then build higher priced, more sensitive radios. The signal was often heard on fences and other rusted metal objects. Local farmers installed lights in their barns that ran off the free power. One of the original transmitters is still in the building. The amplifier that delivered the high power is also still there, but no longer functional. The 900,000 lbs of tower is actually the antenna, which is resting on a rather large ceramic insulator.
See the attached photo of the nearby historical marker. Rumor has it there is a nearby benchmark you can log.
Make sure you check out the user webpage above. For a real treat, go at night. Also it has been mentioned that the adjacent restaurant has great ice cream.
