Geocache Description:

Vicinity of Wungong Dam, easy walking, kid friendly, dogs allowed on trail but not near dam.

Park in the lower dam carpark at the end of Admiral Road. The gate is closed at 6pm so if it is after that time you could easily park just on the outside and walk the extra 100m or so. Dogs are allowed on the trail but not on the dam grounds (you'll have to work this one out - I did a covert sneak up to the trail under the (lack of) cover of full daylight with Running Bear and Little White Dove). From the carpark head right, up to the trail which follows the same path as some electricity wires for a short time. Waypoint 1 is a short deviation from the main trail, it overlooks the foundation of an old homesite belonging to William Butcher and his wife Marian. The Butchers built the house in the early 1860's and only the foundations remain, as for the people; William and his wife (aka MaryAnn) are buried in the St Mary in the Valley Churchyard in Kelmscott and as a point of interest (for me anyway) I found out that their son Walter is the same Walter Butcher who built the house we live in (around 1910-1912). Spooky. After collecting Waypoint 1 head back up to the main path to collect Waypoint 2 (I'm not the sadistic sort to make you trail blaze through all the rough stuff). A word of caution; the first time I went down to set up WP1 I came across a group of feral pigs fossicking around the foundations (group of pigs? herd? mob? ....flock?). I backed away very very quietly and turned tail out of there, I have very vivid memories of an old Aussie movie called Razorback about a feral boar (actually my memories of the movie aren't really vivid - I remember a sunset, a windmill and someone screaming but heck, that's enough for me). I've been back 2 times since and haven't seen any more. Anyway, moving on, the cache isn't far from WP2. WP1 and WP2 are 35mm film cannisters, each under a rock near a tree. The cache is a 2L container in a plastic bag in a crevice between some biggish rocks. The waypoint co-ords are accurate to about 5m - lots of trees.
