This cache is along the Old National Road that started out as a
set of turnpike roads connecting Baltimore to Frederick. Eventually
it pushed on out past Cumberland and on west to Vandalia,
Illinois.
Living in Frederick, I am aware of a number of the old stone
mile markers that travelers used to measure their progress as the
traveled this road. This one marks Mile 41 near the area called
Sycamore when I was a kid. Sycamore was really just a gas station
by a Sycamore tree, but it was the 50's version of a convenience
store and holds a lot of memories for kids that lived out that
way.
On to the cache! You will need to go to the coordinates above
(you can park here) and look around for the marker. The coordinates
are only approximate and you will need to take your own reading to
do the projection, or you can use a compass and pace it off.
From the Mile 41 marker, walk 374 feet along a bearing of 277
degrees true (not magnetic).
This is a very simple cache, so no hint. A seasoned cacher will
not even need to pace it off, they will eyeball it and walk right
up to the cache.
The cache is starting with a FTF prize of a Maryland Geocoing,
unregistered so the new owner can use it as they see fit. I see
that I forgot to thank ParrotRob for the minicache setup he
provided from his
Gone Fishin' cache.
Good luck and check out the other Mile Marker caches soon to
come.
