Geocache Description:

“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just a year and a half, the quest has grown to over three hundred eighty caches hidden in thirty-eight Indiana counties, and two Ohio counties, and the hiders have grown to sixteen cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 750 cacher teams have logged over 8,900 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #389

"Freedom Quest"

West Grove Cemetery is in Center Township, Wayne County north of Centerville, Indiana. Wayne County has a rich history of early Quaker settlers. This small cemetery was originally established in 1814 for Quaker burials. The Quaker faith is committed to the equality of all human beings, social justice, peace, the right to freedom of conscience and encourages pacifism and non-violence.

Ultimately the cemetery was opened up for non-denominational burials. Interestingly, this cemetery is also the final resting spot for many soldiers who served their country in the pursuit of social justice and equality, including Civil War and WWI veterans. At the very back of the grounds you will also find the grave of a Revolutionary War soldier, Edward Benbow, Sr., who was born in Cumberland County, North Carolina in 1761 and died in 1829. Also look for the grave of another Revolutionary War soldier, Robert Commons, born 1748 in Ireland and died December 19, 1837.

Revolutionary War Veteran, Edward Benbow, Sr. whose oldest son, Barclay married Mary McClure and had ten children and later married Sarah Hickman and had five more children.

Rebecca Cheesman’s headstone

What an appropriate surname for a tombstone.

The cache is a small match-safe container with a log. Be sure and bring your own pen or pencil. It is hidden away from graves. Please return the cache exactly as you found it.

As always, no ISQ searching after dusk, and cache in, trash out.
