Once thought of as Elizabethtown’s first suburb, Claysville once was a strong community, existing for more than 150 years. The village was situated along Dixie Highway, extending one-quarter of a mile in all directions. It was first settled in the late 1700s when Capt. Thomas Helm constructed Helm’s Fort. John Young Brown, who served as Kentucky’s governor from 1891 to 1895, was born in Claysville in June 1835. The community was also known for its “sulpher well” where many residents of the area walked to each day to get a drink of water, claiming it had magnificent therapeutic properties. As time passed Claysville was slowly incorporated into Elizabethtown.
