Geocache Description:

Rock Bluff School

The cache is a Bison Tube which should be a no-brainer to find. It’s located at the Rock Bluff School house atop a hill in the old ghost town of Rock Bluff. The school house was built in 1870 by Dr. Joseph Diven Patterson for around $3,500. Dr Patterson originally established the school as the Naomi Institute. The Naomi Institute was known as one of the leading educational institutions in the state and the first institution in the county to offer secondary-level education. The school served as the Naomi Institute for only two years, and in the fall of 1872, the building became known as the Rock Bluff School. The school originally had a second story until a tornado took it off. The town of Rock Bluff was quite the happening town with a population of 150 during the mid 1800s. It had two general stores, a blacksmith shop and a post office. A few years ago you could still see the remaining structure of the Post Office/General Store, but now it’s a pile of bricks in a field. Rock Bluff was a steamboat town and met its demise along with other steamboat towns along the Missouri River when the railroad went to Plattsmouth from Kansas City and Lincoln. The school house is also on the Nebraska Historic Register as Naomi Institute (Rock Bluff School) [CC15-002] Listed 1977/03/24. You can drive right up to the school, even though its looks like a private drive. Just follow the unpaved road after the main gravel ends. .
