This is a Science Fiction Library cache that may involve a bit of bushwhacking.
Ok, boys and girls. Here is an cache located in Lincoln Homestead Park that offers an nice walk in the woods, a pleasant place for a picnic or a little fishing, and a small Illinois history lesson to boot. Plus, it’s a theme cache!
First, the history. When Abraham Lincoln moved from Indiana to Illinois, he lived in a cabin located here. There is a commemorative marker noting the details. Also, this is the site where the brothers Whitley dammed the Sangamon river and operated a mill for a time. The remnants of the dam are still visible from the low bluff overlooking the river.
Now, about the cache. Whitley’s Mill II is a science fiction library cache. Inside the standard military ammo case are nearly a dozen sci-fi paperbacks from authors like Asimov, Simak, Del Rey, Aldis, Blish, Carter, Sturgeon, Clark, and Norton. There is still a little room for some small signature items but please don’t leave anything else behind or the case will get too full. BUT PLEASE – bring a paperback sci-fi and trade for one in the library. If you TAKE A BOOK, you MUST LEAVE A BOOK behind.
Depending upon the time of year, there is a fair amount of bushwhacking required and long pants are suggested.
There is plenty of parking in this small quaint state park as well as plenty of stuff for the kids to play on. There is also a pair of stairways leading down to the river edge for an interesting hike or just a little fishing.
This cache was placed here in memory of Whitley's Mill I cache - which suddenly went missing one day and is presumed dead. We have picked a different location from the first.
