After retiring, each of twelve astronomers and life-long friends
from Grand Forks, North Dakota moved to a different town in one of
four states (Arizona, California, Florida and Texas). As they share
a fondness for their home-town and each other's company, the six
men - Ernie, Oscar, Pete, Reggie, Sonny, and Wally - and six women
- Caroline, Eleanor, Linda, Mona, Olga, and Wilma - return to Grand
Forks every summer. Each has his or her own unit (numbered 101
through 304 in the illustration) in the same condominium complex.
Tonight, the twelve friends are celebrating their return to North
Dakota with a dinner party in the condo's recreation center. Can
you match the friend (identified by full name - two surnames are
Meyer and White) in each seat at the table (A through L in the
illustration) with his or her winter home and condo number ? Each
condo door is adorned with a different decoration in the
illustration below. Note : Phoenix, Sun City and Tucson are in
Arizona; Laguna Beach, Malibu and Oceanside are in California;
Daytona Beach, Sarasota and West Palm Beach are in Florida; and Bay
City, Corpus Christi, and Freeport are in Texas.
1.) Each floor of the condo building is occupied by one winter
resident of each of the four states.
2.) The three people whose winter homes are in Arizona are Wally
(whose seat is either L or F), Ms. Reynolds, and Oscar (whose condo
is immediately above Reggie's).
3.) Ernie Crane and Eleanor have condos in diagonally opposite
corners; the condo owned by the one surnamed Landry is in the
diagonally opposite corner from that of the one who winters in
Malibu.
4.) One person who winters in California is Ms. French; the
condo of the one who winters in Oceanside is located one floor
above that of the one who winters in Laguna Beach.
5.) People who winter in the same state occupy consecutive seats
at the dinner table.
6.) Mr. Landry's condo is either immediately above or
immediately below that of the one who winters in Bay City.
7.) The three people who winter in Florida are Linda, the one in
seat B, and the one surnamed O'Reilly.
8.) In consecutive clockwise order around the table, the twelve
seats belong to the one who winters in Tucson, Mona, the person who
winters in Freeport, the friend surnamed Smith, the person whose
front door depicts a hunter, the friend who lives in #202, Olga,
the person who owns #301, the friend surnamed Jenkins, Eleanor, the
friend surnamed Richardson, and Oscar.
9.) The three people who winter in Texas are the one in seat H,
Ms. Peterson, and Wilma; one person who winters in Texas has the
same first-name and last-name initials, but in reverse, as a person
who winters in California.
10.) The condos of the people who winter in West Palm Beach and
Oceanside (which are on the same floor) are both somewhere below
that of the person who winters in Daytona Beach.
11.) The two people who sit in each pair of diagonally opposite
corners of the table live in condos that are next to, and on the
same floor as, each other; these two pairs are Pete and the person
who winters in Phoenix, and Mr. Eastman and Sonny.
