An interesting island location.
White Island close to the north eastern corner of Lower Lough Erne has been home to Christian settlements for many centuries. Many structures are believed to have been present in the past from simple wooden churches to the remains of the more elaborate stone construction still present thought to have been built about 1200, with it’s Romanesque door, the only intact Romanesque door in Northern Ireland.
Eight stone carved figures, excavated over the years, are built into the eastern wall of the church. Their exact origins are unknown but are believed to be very early Christian. They were simply used as building blocks in the present structure.
The cache itself is a small waterproof vial which has been camouflaged to blend in with surroundings containing a log book and pencil. It is too small for any swap items.
White Island Ferries operate from the Castle Archdale Marina. They operate between 11am & 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from April to June. From July to the end of August they operate between the same times daily. Allow one and a half hours for the trip.
Of course it makes for a much more interesting trip to travel by canoe, (my 11 year old son managed it) -- Give it a go!!!
Please note the cache is accessible by moving one small stone at ground level so please replace it carefully.
