Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden just outside the village of Badby, near the start of the Nene Way footpath. Mostly easy going around the village picking up the information to give you the final location, then a short walk along possibly muddy, marked footpaths to the cache itself. You'll be walking near water for much of the way, so keep an eye on any small people in your party. You'll also be crossing a field that usually has sheep in it, so please keep dogs under close control.

Badby is said by many to be one of the prettiest villages in Northamptonshire. Maybe they are biased - I'll leave you to make up your own mind. Whatever your opinion, please enjoy your stroll around the village.

The co-ordinates at the top of the page are for the suggested parking location. There is a picnic site here, plenty of parking and also an information board where you can identify some of the landmarks. Pause a few minutes to take in the view of the village of Badby nestling in the valley, just a few hundred yards from the source of the River Nene.

Have another look at that information board. What is the reference number for the start of the Nene Valley Way?

Write it down here (A=___).
(NB - Recent geocachers report that this information board has been vandalised. Don't worry if you can't read the number - you'll be passimg an identical board later on, opposite the Post Office)

Now, lock up your car and set off across the field on the footpath to Badby. Set your GPSr to N52°13.692 W001°10.824. There is a small haulage yard here so watch out for lorries going in/out. The drivers here get a lie-in at the weekends. The earliest they are allowed to leave the yard on a Sunday is 0B00hrs (24hr clock).

Write the answer here (B=___).

Just a few yards away at N52°13.673 W001°10.831 there is a dire warning about the dangers of electricity. An emergency contact number is given 0800 6C6 555.

Write the answer here (C=___).

Walk a little further into the village across the Green. It used to be dominated by several large horse chestnut trees, but sadly most of them were cut down a few years ago on safety grounds. Find your way to the village Post Office at N52°13.595 W001°10.900. The last mail collection on a Monday is at X.YZ pm. Your fourth answer can be calculated as D=X-Y.

Write the answer here (D=___).

Carry on further into the village, passing the Windmill Inn on your right. This is one of two pubs in the village and you'll be sure of a friendly welcome at either of them (or both, if you wish...). Make your way to N52°13.435 W001°10.968 where you will need to write down the number on the lamp post.

Write it here (E=___).

Go into the churchyard at N52°13.430 W001°10.926 and have a look around the church. Most of the headstones in the churchyard are old and weathered. One of them carries a poignant little inscription regarding a baby girl born to Mr and Mrs Lewin. The poor mite didn't even make it to her first birthday, being only FF months old when she died.

Write down the answer here (FF=___)

They ran out of space for burials in the original churchyard around 1900, and a new cemetery was established at the edge of the village. Make your way to N52°13.450 W001°10.714 where you will find the final resting place of Joseph Derek Arch, who for many years kept the Maltsters Arms pub in the village. He was not very old when he died, being only GH years old.

Write it down here (GH=___).

Nearby you will find the grave of someone described as a "Toolmaker, Soldier and Gentleman". He was born during the Great War, on 25.J.1915.

Write the answer here (J=___).

Gather up all the numbers you've collected on your way round the village and rearrange them as below to give you the co-ordinates of the cache location itself. It's a short walk across the fields and you'll be following the first part of the Nene Valley Way.

N 52°ED.BAJ
W 001°FF.CHG

The cache itself is in a small clear plastic Tupperware type container with a red lid. When originally placed the contents included a pack of playing cards, some car headlight bulbs, a Northamptonshire Police tunic button, a CR2032 battery, a PS/2-USB adaptor and the obligatory notebook and stubby pencil. I've also left a Travel Bug in there to continue its journey.
