Another cache in my railroad series...
On the eastern edge of the Nygren Wetlands Preserve is the remnants of the Racine & Mississippi Railroads rock river bridge . Spanning over 400 ft, the first structure was built in 1856. It was updated to a steel truss bridge in the early 1900s. It was dismantled and scrapped shortly after the line was abandoned in the 1970s. All that remains are seven impressive concrete piers and the remnants of several of the original wooden pilings.
There is no access from the east or direct north. I recommend parking at the observation deck on Rockton and Hansberry rds ( 42 27.564 89 06.806) and take the scenic 1.5 mile hike.
The cache is a standard 30 cal ammo can with the usual stuff. Be prepared for a little climbing and bushwacking
