Geocache Description:

We challenge you to come along and discover the reason for the name of this cache! It is a two-part multi-cache in Pamber End. It shouldn’t take too long – it is about 500 feet from the car parking site to the cache itself. It is based at a pretty and historic location that we discovered on a long walk around the area – it’s well worth a visit!

A bit of history:

Completed around 1130AD as a dependency of the Benedictine Abbey of Vigor at Cerisy in Normandy, in it’s time Pamber Priory was the second largest and wealthiest monastic establishment in Hampshire. The name Pamber probably derives from the word Pannacium which meant a fee for grazing land. The modern parish was in early times entirely forest and was hunted by King John on many occasions. By the reign of Henry III (1216-72) much of the forest was being converted to arable land and the proceeds from cutting the timber were used for building the Great Hall at Winchester. The church at Pamber is the Priory of St Mary and St John the Baptist, and registers exist from 1659.

While we were placing the cache, we saw several deer (and also several men with guns – rather disconcerting………).

Waypoint one:

N51 19 156 W001 07 665 – how many circular windows are there on the north side of the building? The answer will give you A.

Waypoint two:

N51 19 A19 W001 07 (A+4)00 – the tree cover may cause a few problems with your signal, but please persevere. You are looking for a medium-small click-lock plastic container. Treasure inside currently includes: body spray, chalk, bulldog clip, highlighter pen, ruler, notebook, make up brush, and a small pot of playdough. There is also a disposable camera – please take a picture of yourselves and make a note of the photo number in the log book when you sign it. We are looking forward to seeing your photos!

Assuming that you have found “James Herriot Required”(!), why not try our nearby cache called “Of Mice and Mole, Deer Deer”? It’s less than a mile away…………..
