This is a traditional cache named after the nearby “Caldecote Hall”
which is currently being converted into luxury apartments. The
Estate of Caldecote has had a, turbulent past. It was registered in
the Domesday Survey of 1086 as being in the ownership of the Bishop
of Chester when it was valued at the princely sum of 60 shillings.
Family feuds, battles, lawsuits and suspicious fires all feature in
the colourful history of the estate. As an institution in the
1930’s and 1940’s Caldecote Hall was a retreat for recovering drug
and alcohol addicts. This proved less successful than it’s owners,
The Church of England Temperance Society, realised. As when it
closed 3 truckloads of empties were found hidden in the attics. You
may also be interested in the Caldecote Steam Party held around
September each year. Limited roadside parking is available on
Woodford Lane to the West of the Cache. You can also approach from
the Village of Caldecote but parking could be difficult. A short
continuation along the footpath from the Cache site would enable
you to have a look around the village. Boots would be a good idea,
as it can get a bit muddy, especially at the start where you have
to cross a Crop Field. If you fancy a longer walk then park in the
village of Witherley but take care crossing the A5. A well-earned
pint in the Blue Lion in the centre of Witherley after your walk
would be quite refreshing. The Cache is a small plastic food
container hidden at ground level. Tree cover might be a bit of a
problem but my coordinates were within 7 meters.
