Dearborn Dearly Departed Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Russ and Dana: Well this one has been here almost 16 years and has been moved about a bit as things have changed, but it's become progressively more difficult to find a reliable hidey-hole for it. I guess it's probably time to let Dearborn Dearly Departed depart, and open this area in case someone else wants to place one here. Thanks for all of the visits and logs!!

Geocache Description:

This geocache is located at the Dearborn Community Cemetery. The town of Dearborn is at the half way point between St. Joseph and Kansas City. The cemetery was founded in 1872 in honor of Albert Dean, a local farmer, and his wife Ora Lee, the town postmistress.

An article from the collections at the Leavenworth County Historical Society and Museum states, "January 1, 1883, what had hitherto been known as Kimball, in Platte County, was made a station on the Rock Island and was renamed Dearborn."

Dearborn was also a stop on the Interurban Railway - a light railway system that operated between St. Joseph and Kansas City, Missouri from 1913 to 1933. Passenger trains on the railway traveled at speeds of up to 70 mph!

This town is home to the North Platte R-1 High School Panthers. There are several antique stores in town, and a veteran's memorial at the City Hall. A project is currently underway to build a new ballfield and city park. A nationally renowned artist, Rhett Johnson, makes his home in Dearborn, and on nearby HWY 116 you can visit Comanche Acres Iris and Water Gardens, where there are 20 acres of iris in full bloom each May/June.

This cache was placed with permission by the Dearborn Community Cemetery Board of Directors.
