Geocache Description:

Good Old Novotny Park. This is the third in my "Spinning a Yarn" series of simple caches hidden in typical parks throughout the area. (OK, this isn't a typical, boring park), but I digress.

Vladimer Novotny settled in this area in 1836. He was a dentist by trade. A darn good one too, I'm told. However, Vladimer wasn't very swift with the pocketbook.

Novotny purchased this land from the Ajax Land Company in 1838. He had intended to build his house next to the wonderful little stream that runs through the very center of the present day park. If you go to N42*29.200 W87* 49.392, you'll see the remnants of his house foundation.

Vladimer built his house in 1839-1840, a particularly dry period. Yep, you can see where this yarn is spinning. Well, during the spring thaws of 1841, the house, all of it's contents and Vladimer Novotny were swept away. Some say all the way to Lake Michigan. We don't know for sure, because nobody ever found his remains.

When the stream waters receded, all that remained of Vladimer Novotny were the building foundations and a couple of dentistry tools.

Sad...

Happy caching!

11/21/05 UPDATE:
After so many people had problems with this one, I'm upping the difficulty rating. And a hint.
