Geocache Description:

Carolina Mantis (Stagmomantis carolina), female

This is the bonus cache for my Benchmark Hunter Series 1. The posted coordinates are not the actual location of the cache. In order to find the actual coordinates you must visit the first three caches in the series (listed below), visit a benchmark near each of them, collect information near each benchmark, and use this information to form the final coordinates. Two of the three benchmarks in Series 1 is are NGS benchmarks that you can log separately at geocaching.com.

Following are the caches in the Benchmark Hunter Series 1:

Cascaded Pools (BH1-1) GC17EDD
Cottonwood (BH1-2) GCRBJV
Four (BH1-3) GCRBK2
Benchmark Hunter Series 1 Bonus (BH1-4) GCRC7Z (The cache you are reading now)

Here are instructions for finding the bonus cache:

1. Visit the first three caches in the series, as listed above. In each cache you will find coordinates to a nearby benchmark and instructions on some information to collect nearby. You may need to write something down so bring pen and paper.

2. Visit the benchmark and collect the information as instructed.

3. Form the final coordinates to the bonus cache as follows.

Cascaded Pools (BH1-1)
The steel benchmark rod is severely bent, now facing roughly which direction?
Northeast: A = 2.488, D= 26.763
Northwest: A = 2.489, D= 26.777
Southeast: A = 2.012, D= 26.787
Southwest: A = 4.749, D= 10.825

Cottonwood (BH1-2)
Count the number of wooden posts/poles within 50 feet of the benchmark.
0: B= 2.063, E = 22.866
1: B= 3.205, E = 22.898
2: B= 2.524, E = 21.533
3: B= 1.452, E= 22.900

Four (BH1-3)
Count the total number of fence posts in the section of chainlink fence near the benchmark, including the end posts.
10: C = 4.475, F = 2.531
12: C = 3.740, F = 2.555
14: C = 5.375, F = 16.295
16: C = 3.043, F = 2.684

4. Sum your results as follows:
Y = A + B + C
X = D + E + F

5. The final cache is located at the following coordinates:
Latitude: 36 degrees, Y minutes
Longitude: 95 degrees, X minutes

Example solution:

If your answers are 0, 1, and 16,
Y = A + B + C = 2.488 + 3.205 + 3.043 = 8.736
X = D + E + F = 26.763 + 22.898 + 2.684 = 52.345
So the final cache would be at 36°8.736' 95°52.345'

If you manage to find the bonus cache container without finding the other three caches, or without solving the puzzle, you may certainly log the find but please tell me exactly how you did it. Feel free to post any photos of the benchmarks, but of course don't post any photos that will give away the answers. You may verify the final coordinates with me by e-mail before going for the cache.

The final container is a little difficult to retrieve from its hiding spot, but just be patient, try all possibilities, and you will get it out.

Please let me know what you think about this series. Be careful, tread lightly, and have fun.

--Congratulations to yogiabb on the first to find--
