Multi-cache which takes you firstly to spooky Devizes Castle and then on a round trip walk of about 0.3m. Suitable for pushchairs and should take about 20 mins to complete car door to car door.
Many people don't even realise Devizes has a castle. I for one have worked in the town for some years and only found the castle by accident one day whilst out in my lunch hour.
History:
The castle stands on the site of a medieval 11th century wooden castle. After the destruction of the wooden castle in 1113, it was rapidly rebuilt in stone. The stone castle was destroyed in 1645 when Oliver Cromwell's army bombarded it using a battery of guns in the nearby Market Square. Gradually throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the building was rebuilt, to the present-day privately owned mansion that is Devizes Castle.
Ghosts:
The Castle is inhabited by a number of ghosts of former inhabitants which have been sighted on numerous occasions. They include the ghost of a young woman who it is said was bricked up alive behind one of the walls (she is often still seen pacing the corridors at night), and a young cavalier swordsman.
All the dogs who have lived in the castle over the years are spookily always wary of one particular spot in the castle - the gallery. They all stand at one end completely still and tense and gaze along the gallery as though they are watching someone or something.
The cache:
Park in the Market Place and head towards the posted coordinates. They will take you to a view of the castle and 3 numbers on the ground. ie. BS abc. Now solve the following to get the final coordinates to the cache:
N51 21. b-b 0 b-a
W001 59. c-1 b 1
Please note the cache is now a micro and hidden in a 35mm film canister.
