Welcome to the most awesome spot on Table Mountain!
There are two ways to get to Carrel's Ledge. Please go for option 1 unless you're afraid of heights... it's far more spectacular!
1. Approach Maclears Beacon along Smuts Track. At S 33' 58.144, E 18' 25.483 turn off to the right along a fairly inconspicuous path. The path comes out on the south side of a steep gorge cut into the mountain. Looking north across the gorge, you'll see a rock face. On about the same level as you, there's a crack in the rock face, which is actually a path (check out the pic for an idea of what it looks like). Follow the path on the left around the gorge and you'll end up on Carrel's Ledge. Note: afraid of heights? - Go for option 2.
2. From Maclears Beacon head east towards S33' 57.957, E18' 25.716. As you approach that coordinate, you'll come to a bit of a drop-off down some rocks to a flat area below with a small path running more or less north-south. Head south and you'll eventually end up on Carrel's Ledge entering it from the opposite side to option 1 above.
As I'm bored with the "standard" plastic cache containers out there, I decided to go for something with a bit of class. So an old wooden Cuban cigar box is doing duty as a cache container. It's black bagged and ziploc'ed to waterproof it. Let me know if there are breaches in the plastic, so that I can do a maintenance run.
