Welcome to Ioco
In 1913, the Imperial Oil Company began construction of a refinery along Burrard Inlet. As the site was very isolated, getting there was difficult. Workers either used the ferry from Vancouver, the water taxi from Port Moody or rowed from Barnet. Others chose not to commute and set up a tent town along the railway south of the townsite. Since a more permanent solution was needed, the town of Ioco, named after the company, was created. By 1923, the community had grown to more than 80 buildings. The houses, which were sold to the employees, included indoor flush toilets, a real luxury at the time. The buildings included a one-room schoolhouse, a grocery store, a church and the community centre. These buildings are among the 14 still standing today.
The refinery closed down in 1995, but it is still used as a distribution terminal today. In 2001, Port Moody declared Ioco a heritage conservation area.
From the cache site you can see the church which is now the Ioco United Church and is still in use today and the school, which was closed in 2005 after 82 years of education. Across the ravine, you will see the original community centre and grocery store, the Ioco Groceteria, closed in 1994. The bridge is now blocked so you will have to walk around on the streets. Many houses still exist around the townsite, some are still occupied.
