Thanks for your interest. I'm afraid Cathedral Cache is gone. It got stolen twice. It was replaced the first time by some fellow geo cachers - and then the second time it went missing I disabled the listing. Unfortunately, the cathedral is not in the best neighborhood in Fond du Lac. To tell you the truth, I was amazed it lasted as long as it did - I got about 85 visits or so out of it.

As a member of the cathedral, I can tell you that we welcome visitors anytime - so, geocache or no - drop by and take a look! There's gobs of old statues, and even a dead bishop buried in the middle in a marble sarcophagus. All you need to do is stop in the church office and they will let you in!

Geocache Description:


On September 3, 1848, the Rev. Joshua Sweet, Episcopal clergyman in the village of Fond du Lac, went to the court house to formally organize St. Paul’s Church. The first congregation included some well known names, Doty, Tallmadge, Ruggles, and McWilliams, to name a few. They worshiped in various makeshift locations until they had a building of their own.

In 1866, the expanding congregation moved to its current location on West Division St. In January 1884, this building burned down and was replaced between the years of 1885 – 1887, with the present structure.

From the years 1889-1912, Bishop Charles Chapman Grafton worked to complete the interior of the building. Some of the earliest acquisitions were the pulpit (done by local stone carver Robert Powrie), the brass eagle lectern, and the German carvings of 1893-1894. These came from Munich and include: the twelve Apostles, St. Paul, and twenty five angels. These carvings are outstanding examples of late Victorian art.

It was Bishop Grafton’s request that he be buried within the Cathedral walls, so in the year following his death on August 30, 1912, the area known as the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel was redone. The white marble and red porphyry sarcophagus, supporting a life-size figure of the Bishop, became the permanent site of his burial on August 30, 1913.

Being a semi-serious geo-cacher and a bit of a history buff, I’ve decided to place my very first cache close to this historic building. You should not have to cross church property (although anyone is welcome to tour the grounds), to find this cache. Muggle traffic will be exceptionally high on Friday afternoons, Saturday evenings, and of course, Sunday mornings.
