The cache is located on a steeply wooded hill behind Halesowen College with at least four different approaches to the site possible. Recommended parking is in Shelah Road at the base of the hill.
Two of the four approaches are accessible from Shelah Road
(N52º 27.505’ W002º 03.123’) & (N52º 27.568’ W002º 3.181’).
If you look carefully in Furnace Hill you’ll see a path that runs between two houses
(N52º 27.434’ W002º 3.001’).
And the 'scenic route' is to approach via the steps in Blagdon Road
(N52º 27.544’ W002º 3. 259’).
The site, known locally as Furnace Coppice, is I believe is a surviving fragment of the indigenous ancient woodland that once covered Halesowen and benefits from infrequent visits from the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) as part of the Black Country Urban Forest Millennium Programme. It looks especially good in the spring when the bluebell’s are out.
The container is a standard 1 liter food container and about 2/3 full at inception, so its’ probably best to stick to fairly small swaps and TB’s. It’s also easily accessible from the path so there is no need to go slipping and sliding all over the hill.
Contents on inception are:
• Laminated First to Find Card
• Handheld Sega football game
• Mini gel pens
• Bank of Indonesia 500 Rupiah coin
• Bank of Indonesia 25 Rupiah coin
• J-lo perfume sampler
• Bart Simpson Pencil Sharpener
• VW Beetle Convertible
• Small pack of novelty erasers
• Viva la Revolution TB
The high level of tree cover makes getting a good signal difficult at the best of times so I would welcome feedback on the accuracy or otherwise of my co-ordinates (I’ve averaged out several readings, so hopefully they’re not too far out).
Have fun and enjoy the cache.
