Balboa Park International Exchange Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cookie & Bruiser: It is with a sad heart that we are archiving this cache after over 19 years and over 2500 finds. This cache and we have been on the disabled list. I am recovering from a painful broken arm (at the shoulder) along with a major cough virus (not Covid) for both of us, while grieving the loss of a dear friend and neighbor and helping the family.

The delay in archiving was partly because we had hoped the reconstruction of the bridge would also include the railings on the sides of the original bridge. We felt the railings were a safety feature for this popular spot and helped facilitate the search for this cache on the steep hill access to it.

Upon checking the site in person, we discovered that some of the topography of the cache site had also been altered and was no longer suitable for the type of cache that we had here and would have wanted to continue (a medium to large tin with an international related design filled with internationally-themed swag.

Thanks to everyone who visited the cache over the years.

Geocache Description:

Scotland, Austria, Ireland, and China are among the 30 countries belonging to the House of Pacific (peaceful) Relations in Balboa Park. Many of the countries have their own small cottages which date from the 1935 California-Pacific Exposition and are open to visitors on Sunday afternoons. Between February and mid-November different cottages host cultural events featuring their native music, dancing, and food. Thought this would be a great place for an international cache, with room for Travel Bugs (especially those wanting to travel to other countries) and for swag with an international theme. (NEW NOTE: because this cache has been taken several times, we do NOT advise placing TB's or U.S. money in the cache. The large tins have been replaced by a smaller tin.) There is a large canyon with trails behind the cottages. The cache is hidden here. Watch out for muggles above, below, and across. As I was checking out the area, I could hear the wonderful sound of bagpipes! First to Find prize is a gift certificate from the United Nations and UNICEF gift shop located by the cottages. Starting swag includes a set of British magnets, smiley international flag stickers, a beautiful tiny globe, toy 747, a couple of stamp magnets and some paper money (no longer in circulation) from other countries, and a San Diego magnet.
