Lion in wait Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

As the owner has not responded to either my log or my colleague's previous log requesting that they check this cache I am archiving it.

Please note that once the cache has been archived, this can not be undone. This is explained in the Help Center - http://support.groundspeak.com//index.php?pg=kb.page&id=70

You will need to create a new listing, put it back in for review and as long as it meets today's guidelines and no other caches have been published in the area causing a proximity problem, then it will be published.

Regards

Geocache Description:

New Location. The stars of this cache site have been security fenced off recently. I have moved the cache to a slightly new location away from the them. The new cache co ordinates are 53 12.852 004 11.018 and looking at whats there. The cache is now a tobacco tin, and powerful, tiny, neodymium magnets are involved ! This area is now crossed by the coastal footpath, so look out for muggles as you look out for the tin.

This is a bit of a forgotten corner of North Wales, well worth finding if you like architectural/railway history. There are two giant stone beasts guarding the Brittania Bridge on both sides of the Menai Strait. They are only really visible, albeit very briefly, to passengers travelling by train between Bangor and Holyhead. North Wales is rather short of architectural gems, and these animals have caught the imagination of a number of people locally who have a plan to elevate them on heightened stone pillars so that they can be seen clearly from the road. You can go and look at them in their hidden splender. To access this cache you need to turn off the main road running between the roundabout at junction 9 of the A55 and the old Menai Bridge roundabout on the mainland side of the Strait. Turn into the hamlet of Treborth just after the roundabout and proceed through. You will come to a sign saying the road is private and is now a footpath. Park near here, or back at the hamlet and proceed on foot along the track. You pass under the massive flyover of the A55 as it runs onto the bridge, as you go. About 30 yards on there is a path to the right running up towards the bridge. Walk up this and prepare for a surprise. After enjoying these regal creatures, take a walk further down the road towards the Strait. Heading for 53 12.852 004 11.018. The Cache is magnetic, so where will you look ?? The square metal bridge section on a display is relevant of course..! This is a thin section of the original tubular bridge which spanned the still present Egyptian style bridge supports as built by Stephenson in 1851. The tubular structure of the bridge caught fire in the early 70s when kids looking for bird nests using flaming torches accidentally set alight to grease soaked canvas which formed part of the construction. The resultant inferno distorted the metal so badly that the tubular span was a write off. One of the 'firebugs' still lives in Bangor, but tends not to talk about his childhood pranks. He unwittingly solved an emergent traffic problem on the Island, as the new span carries a road as well, and that is up to capacity now. You can now enjoy the massive engineering of the bridge, both old and newer. If you carry on further down the road you get to one of the most dramatic Strait viewpoints, but dont fall in when the tide is on the race. These are treacherous waters! Enjoy.
