Geocache Description:

“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just a year and a half, the quest has grown to over three hundred eighty caches hidden in thirty-eight Indiana counties, and two Ohio counties, and the hiders have grown to twenty cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 750 cacher teams have logged over 8,900 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #392

"Solomon’s Seal"

Riverside Cemetery is in Jackson Township, Wayne County just north of Cambridge City, Indiana. The cemetery was opened in 1869 as a new city cemetery to replace the Capitol Hill Cemetery that had been plagued with soil and accessibility issues. The price of the lots were ten cents per square foot and “any structure or inscription which was deemed offensive or improper shall be removed.”

This cache is named for one of the more notable citizens buried on the grounds of Riverside Cemetery, General Solomon Meredith. A native of North Carolina, when Solomon was nineteen he traveled by foot to Indiana. He later served as Wayne County’s Sheriff and U.S. Marshal for Indiana and was in the State Legislature. In July 1861 he was appointed Colonel of the 19th Regular Indiana Volunteer Infantry, known during the war as the “Iron Brigade.” General Meredith was wounded at Gainesville and Gettysburg. He also had three sons who served in the Civil War. General Meredith’s funeral in 1875 was one of the most imposing events in Cambridge City’s history.

Also at Riverside, you will find the graves of the famous Overbeck Sisters, six women whose original pottery works and paintings are nationally recognized for their valuable contribution to the Arts and Crafts movement in America. The family memorial surprisingly bears the name Overpeck. Their original German name, was a source of constant teasing when the sisters entered school and the chant ‘over-a-peck, over-a-peck, not quite a bushel’ caused the sisters to use a slight variation of the family name for their business.

Complete your visit of Cambridge City's pioneer cemeteries by visiting Capitol Hill Cemetery, the place where Solomon Meredith was originally buried before being moved to the newer Riverside Cemetery. While there you can hunt for the ISQ Skidrow to Capitol Hill Cache and learn more about the area's rich history.
