Geocache Description:

A 3-point multicache, 419 steps to the Turul (mythical eagle) statue near
Tatabánya.

Point 1. N 47°35,305' E 18°24,258' 201 m
Find here the coordinates of the second point
Point 2. Find here the coordinates of the cache closed into a Tube
hidden in the rock wall
Point 3. Find the cache itself, in a nest of the rock

The idea of hiding a cache here was born when we found our very first cache,
the Cave of Turul (GC2E7D), and since then we conquer the 419 steps leading
to the huge bird statue almost every week. The new cache is hidden close to
the bird statue in a less frequented but very exciting place.

Parking is possible near the High School of Modern Business Sciences.

The tour starting from Tatabánya railway station on the red tourist sign.

Point 1: Proceed along the red sign. You will find here a gargoyle, close to
which the coordinates of the next point can be found printed on an electric
pylon. The stairs leading up to the bird start
close to this point.

Point 2. Close to the top of the stairs, you will find a path on the left
side (here the rail is missing), leading to the Szelim cave. Take this
path. At the coordinates found at the previous point there is a natural
indentation in the rock wall; the coordinates of the cache are hidden here
in a Tube. The place is guarded by stinging thorn.

Point 3. The cache proper is hidden in a nest of rock.
Be careful to hide the cache back
to the same place after logging.

We recommend you to visit the cave and the statue, which is the largest bird
statue of Middle Europe. Do not spare your film or the memory of your
digital camera. :)

History:
The Turul (mythical eagle) statue of Tatabánya is the largest bronze bird
statue of Europe. The full extension of its wings is 14 m, and the Sword of
Warlord Árpád in its claws is 14 m long. The statue reminds us to the
victory of Árpád and the conqueror Hungarians over Moravian monarch
Svatopluk in 907 close to this statue, at Bánhida.

It is worth noting that in 1896, in the year of the Millenium, 7 major
statues were erected on the historical territory of Hungary as a tribute to
the foundation of Hungarian state, this statue being one of the seven. It
has now become a characteristic symbol of the town Tatabánya, and is part of
its coat of arms. The environment of the statue is now a protected toursitic
area with marked pathways, resting places, illumination, etc.
