STITHTON BAPTIST On January 9, 1887 the United Baptist Church of Jesus Christ at Stithton, Kentucky was organized. In the early Spring of 1888, a church building was completed on Lot #9 in the town of Stithton. The first church building was torn down and a new church building built in 1907. The headquarters building at Fort Knox, Kentucky is the approximately location of Stithton’s first church building. Stithton was a thriving community at the time it was taken over by the Government when Camp Knox was established in August 1918. Camp Knox was named in honor of Henry Knox, Artillery General and Secretary of War from 1785 to 1794. The community took its name from the Stith Family who settled in the area around 1859. Milton Stith purchased more than one thousand acres on the Louisville-Nashville turnpike, which provided the main route between West Point and Elizabethtown. The Main Post Chapel formerly known as St. Patrick’s Church, is the only building that remains What was part of the original town of Stithton In January of 1917 the Government bought the Stithton Baptist Church property as a part of Camp Knox and for several years the building was used as an Army Chapel. In a short time, the government bought the entire town of Stithton and the Church disbanded in May of 1919. Many of the families relocated a few miles south of Old Stithton and formed the town of New Stithton on Wilson Road near what was Anderson Golf Course and is now a housing area. Unfortunately many of the members of Stithton Baptist Church disbursed to all parts of Hardin, Meade, and Bullitt Counties. The last recorded business meeting at Stithton Baptist Church was in January 1917 and the church disbanded in 1919. At this point, a word about the beginning of the town of Radcliff would be appropriate. In the Fall of 1919 Horace McCullum bought a tract of land along Old Dixie Highway and built a General Store. That Store was located directly west of where our church presently is located. He named the community Radcliff in honor of his good friend, Major Radcliff, who was then Commander of the Quartermaster Corps at Camp Knox.
