Since the autumn of 2005 Løren school has a temporary home close to Bjerkebanen, waiting for the new tunnel on Ring 3 to be built, so that the quality of the air at the old school will be at an acceptable level. In the autumn of 2014 the school opened to 1st graders after being closed for 9 years.
Once a part of Aker kommune, and a part of the Løren farm, this school was the biggest in Norway, at its peak in 1937 schooling 1401 pupils.
The school was officially opened on the 1st of May 1891, at a total cost of 27352,81 NOK. It took four further extensions, the last of which was completed in 1932 before the school was completed in the form that survives to this day.
This school, unlike many others in this area remained open during WWII.
The original wooden building that was constructed in 1891, is still present and was used for SFO for some years. Unfortunately due to its location, so close to Ring 3, the noise in the schoolyard was measured at more than 60 decibel, and the air inside during winter became polluted. This led to the school being closed in the autumn of 2005 and moved to new buildings close to Bjerkebanen; waiting for a new beginning once the planned tunnel was being built. In the autumn of 2014 the tunnel was in place and the school was reopened after being closed for 9 years. In a tug-of-war it won back its old name of "Løren skole" from the temporary school which is now a permanent school and has taken the name of "Refstad skole"
1st grade students started at the school in the autumn of 2014 and the schools buildings are projected to be fully finished in 2017. Still it will take some years until the school has 1st to 7th grade students as planned.
What once was Løren school district, is today several smaller districts - Hasle, Sinsen, Årvoll, Tonsenhagen, Linderud and some of Veitvet in addition to Løren.
