This cache is on the roadside with a view of the only Papal altar remaining from Pope John Paul II’s visit to Canada in September 1984. This and the nearby Sainte Marie Among the Hurons were the focal points of his visit to Huronia.
The hillside in front of you made a natural amphitheatre on which hundreds gathered that cool morning. To get to the site you had to have a special ticket, and were bussed in during the early dawn to the parking area across the Wye River. Then it was a walk across a temporary Bailey bridge put across the river by the Canadian Armed Forces.
It was hours before the Pope arrived and cold and overcast. Just before he arrived the sun broke out and suddenly his helicopter appeared overhead with him waving to the crowd. He landed about 3km outside of town and came in with the OPP motorcycle squad leading his pope mobile. It was on the site in front of you that he held mass with the CBC televising. Their white booth is still visible on the top of the hill across the field.
The site is pretty much as it was on that day and can let you experience some of the history of Sept. 15, 1984. It’s the only place in Canada with a tangible papal presence from the trip.
Although the cache is on the public thoroughfare the grounds beyond the fence are part of the Martyr’s shrine and open to the public only through the entrance on Highway 12. If you wish to visit the shrine or get closer to the altar you will have to enter there. However, the cache area provides a public viewing point to directly revisit some of the history of the rock star Pope.
Parking is on the roadside or at N44 44.359 W79 50.247. Please re-cover the cache well before leaving
This one is called winter available because the object in the clue makes it clear where the cache is. The spot won't be hard to find. But, it could (probably will) require some digging in the snow, so be prepared if you try this one later in winter.
