This a fairly short walk, over terrain which varies from vehicle track to faint footpath. Routes to the cache vary, but if coming by car I would recommend parking near the park at N55 52.303 W003 56.699. The location of the cache is N55 52.390 W003 55.704. Due to livestock in the area, I would not recommend this cache for dogs. In wet weather it can be very muddy so boots or wellingtons are recommended.
The North Calder Water runs through the outskirts of Airdrie. Although only a short trip from the town centre it supports a large amount of wildlife. On this walk it is possible to see foxes, squirrels and deer, and a variety of birds including owls, buzzards, kestrels, herons and dippers. Scottish wildcats were sighted here in the 1960s, the most southern recorded sighting. Go down the farm track and over the railway bridge, the new Airdrie to Bathgate line is below you here, and Drumgelloch Station is only a few hundred metres away on your right. The route then follows an old farm track, crossing a bridge near the remains of a viaduct which carried the railway to Inver House Distillery. 30 years ago this was the biggest distillery in Europe, but it closed in 1985/6. As a boy my friends and I would climb underneath the viaduct, crossing the web of metalwork above the glen below. The route then follows a faint track along the south bank of the river, past the waterfall where we would swim or fish. If you look carefully you will see white spots on the rocks where the dippers sit watching for insects.
