This Medal of Honor cache is located at l0 Mile Church of the Bretheren on Dunkard Church Road which was established in 1832. This church is located in West Bethlehem Township. Buried in this cemetery is a Medal of Honor recipient by the name of Corporal Thomas Anderson of Company 1, 1st West Virginia Calavary Division located at Appomattox Station in Virginia. Corporal Anderson was awarded this medal for his capture of the Confederate Flag on April 8, 1865 and was issued the medal on May 3, 1865 at the age of 24.
He was born on July 12, 1841 and died at the age of 71 on September 8, 1912.
The hardest part of this cache is finding the church and getting to the top of the hill. We visited this church on two occasions and happened to arrive there when church was letting out. Much to our surprise we saw two people coming out plus the Reverend. On the second occcasion there were three people and the Reverend. We were told by one of the parishioners that on a good day they might have as many as 5 to 7 people, but on the average, we have three. On one Sunday we found out that they had to cancel churhc because one person wss ill.
Be sure to look at the pictures that were uploaded, especially the TOILET FACILITIES!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a very easy cache but thought you would enjoy the history behind it. We got permission from the church to place this cache. We felt out of consideration that if you decide to do this cache on a Sunday, try to go after 1100 A.M. unless you wish to attend church - I'm sure they would be glad to have you.You can park across the road from the church since one of the parishioners ownes the property.
