A pleasant walk along a river bank.
Make sure you bring some food with you for this cache as it is very difficult to navigate past the wild fowl without paying their tolls!
The town of Cupar is situated almost in the centre of both parish and county, and comprises the two ancient parishes of Cupar-Fife and St Michaels of Tarvit, which were united in 1618. It is a place of considerable antiquity. At an early period the Macduffs, Thanes of Fife, had a castle on a height in the midst of the marshy grounds, which then bordered the Eden and the Lady Burn. It continued the seat of the court of the Stewartry of Fife until the forfeiture of Albany, Earl of Fife, in the reign of James I, when the court was removed to Falkland. No trace of the castle remains, though the place where it stood is still called Castle Hill.
Parking for this cache can be found at N56° 18.844 W003° 00.942 where there is space for three or four cars in the now disused bus stop.
Make your way towards the river and train track to the south along the nature trail, watching out for the moor hens in the bushes. Keep following this track, crossing roads as necessary, picking up information for the cache site along the way.
A. How many places are there to rest your weary legs at N56° 19.025 W003° 00.660?
B. If you wanted to contact Mr Anderson, how many times would you have to dial the number 5?
Watts of Cupar was, until recently, a seed and potato merchant with the Granary to the left of it housing his stores. The building is now a public house and night club.
C. In what year was Watts established? 18?8
D&E. How many arches can be seen in the Granary? DE
The recently renovated bandstand found in the Haugh Park is host to many a local and touring band in the summer months. There is also a Summer Fruit Festival held here every year in July with the local soft fruit growers showing off their wares to the public.
F. When was the bandstand first erected? 1?24
G&H. How many red flowers are there on the outside of the bandstand? GH
J. How many elephants are to be found in the park?
Continue to make your way along the river towards the east of the town, watching out for the primates in the trees across the water as you go. (warning - since setting this they may have evolved from apes but the number is still the same)
K. How many can you see?
(being novices we did not take into account the fact that leaves would grow on the trees and camouflage the animals so we have included an alternative question futher along the trail for during the summer months: K. Cupar's shield and motto is on the Marie Curie Notice Board. How many letters make up the motto and divide it by 3)
Cross the road into the Field of Hope (where you will find the Notice Board!). This flood plain was converted into a beautiful walk for the local residents of Cupar for the millennium by the Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity. In the spring, the daffodils that were planted as their symbol make this a lovely site
The final cache location can be found at N56° 1(A+B).(C-B)(F-A)(D+E) W002° 59.(G+H+K)(DxE)(J)
Having found the cache, a walk through the town back to the car makes an interesting alternative route but beware, there are many temptations along this road, not least the Coffee Towers found at F&D’s!
