Geocache Description:

This cache is all about the location. J.C. and I stumbled upon this place. If we see a hill we tend to climb it. We were rewarded this time.

The Silver Comet Trail is an old rail line of course. As with many rail lines during the civil war, high ground along the rail lines was coveted. Encampments would spring up and troops would dig lines into the hillside. These embattlements can be clearly seen near this cache. There is a main line along the hill top. Behind it is another area where troops were dug in. It was most likely a command center for the battalion leaders. As you will see, it isn't a big area. Further down the hill near the cache you will see a secondary line with three additional defensive positions. Since it is winter, you can see the outstanding position this gave to the troops on the high ground. The secondary line and additional defensive positions seem to prevent a flanking effort in the gap. There are additional embattlements on the other side of the Silver Comet.

This is a simple two stage multi. Stage one gets you to the parking area. It is magnetic, so it should be an easy find once you get there. On it you will find the coordinates to the cache. The final location has a larger lock and lock container and is less than 0.2 miles from the parking area. You will need to climb a pretty steep hill to get to the cache. If you are coming from the southeast going northwest, you will need to pass the parking area and do a U-turn at the next light. There are signs to this effect indicating Silver Comet Trail parking.

As you take the short walk up to the cache, look up to the left and right as you approach the hill. You can see how good the high position is. It is hard to really see anything up there. As you climb the hill, imagine trying to get to the high ground with the tough climb as bullets whiz by you. When you get to the top you can look back and see how good of a view there is of the track. This is a neat find, and there are hundreds of these in GA.

Enjoy this walk back in history.
