Geocache Description:

This is one of two caches set this weekend in locations which bring back memories of my younger days!

I hadn’t visited this beach for about 25 years until coming here to set this cache! However, I used to come here for walks and picnics with my family when I was a child, and when I was older I had some dates with a lovely Ordnance Surveyor who was staying in a house nearby whilst up here mapping the local area out. Back then I knew this place simply as “Boar’s Head” but it may be better known as “Lossie Forest”.

I remember:
Hot summer days having picnics under blue skies.
Spending hours combing the shingle in search of unusual and pretty stones.
Collecting Daphnia and other invertebrates from the pond (near where the cache is hidden) to feed to Dads tropical fish.
Being able to park much closer to the beach than you can now!

Park at N57 41.216 W003 14.837. There are several ways to reach the cache site, however you are looking at a round trip of up to 4 miles whichever route you choose. The terrain is flat throughout and is suitable for mountain bikes.

My recommended route would be to take the track leading NNE out of the car park and follow this until you come to a T-junction (approx NJ 268 683) where you will find a World War Two pillbox and a line of concrete anti-tank boxes stretching to the east and west. Follow the anti-tank boxes eastwards (there is a rough track on their northern side) until you can access the beach easily. The beach here consists of a shingle bank so high that you can’t actually see the sea unless you climb to the top of the bank! It is interesting to walk along the top of the bank and look at the flotsam, jetsam and driftwood underfoot as well as looking out to sea, and along the coast to Lossiemouth in the west and towards the Bin Hill at Cullen in the east. The WW2 defence structures continue in a long unbroken line between the beach and the forest. As it is difficult to walk easily on the shingle, you may prefer to stick to the track between the boxes and the forest. This track is rough but consists of compact sand, grass and pebbles. As you progress along the coast, look out for observation posts and gun positions situated at the top of the banks leading up into the forest. Keep walking until you reach the pillbox at approx. NJ 283 677. At this point, take the track which leads back into the forest - the cache is not too far away now, a short distance off the main track!

After you have found the cache, return to the main track and follow it in a southerly direction until you reach the edge of the forest. At this point, turn right and keep walking until you get back to the car park. This stretch of the walk will give views across to the hills and wind farm south of Elgin.

Thanks to the Forestry Commission for giving permission to hide a cache here.
