Geocache Description:

Located off of a fairly easy road/trail on the slope about halfway between the highway and the beach. Take some time here to check out this historic and spectacular area.

Park on the road between the gate and the highway. Walk down the old road about 500 feet then take the trail to the south another 500 feet. The cache is located on the slope to the west of the trail about 100 feet away. The cache container is an ammo can with a variety of items that I consider suited for the nature of this site. There is a nice crab tree ornament that seems appropriate as a first finder prize and well suited for the site and season when it was placed but take what you like best. This area has lots of history, there is a prehistoric Indian midden very close to the cache site. Frankport was named after S. H. Frank who established a dock for exporting tan oak bark at this natural harbor that is protected from the north winds and swells. The flat area at the beach is the result of a quarry for jetty rock active in the 1950's and 1960's. The natural harbor was used as a temporary port during a longshoreman's strike in the 1960's and was the landing site for major marijuana smuggling operations in the 1980's culminating with the 1986 wreck of the Californa Sun while attempting escape from arrest during an offload operation. The wreck spilled tons of marijuana into the sea resulting in a rare seaweed spread south by the strong north winds and sought by beachcombers between here and Cape Sebastian. Once again gold was discovered on the beach at Gold Beach!
