Walking With Dad Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ohjoy!: If construction is going on at this location, the cache will have been destroyed. I am not able to replace it in a reasonable amount of time, so it's time to let this one go. Sad and yet it had a good life with many beautiful logs written.

Today on my way home to Olympia from Seattle (where I visited kids, grandkids, and one of my great-grandkids) I stopped to walk a loop trail of a few miles. Walking is still one of my favorite pastimes and I do think of Dad when I'm out there.

Good-bye.

Geocache Description:

I would like to take you on a little walk that will always live in my memory. I walked there a number of times pushing my Dad in his wheelchair and it is very special for me because our last walk together was to this spot. I hope you can absorb a bit of the quietude of the area when you find this cache.

Update June 2007 - the area where I last visited with Dad is now under construction, so the cache has been replaced by dhenninger across the street in the little woods.

Update April 2011 - the original area is now completely refurbished, so the cache has been moved back close to the original location.

Some of my earliest memories are of taking walks with my Dad in Clifton. We would walk to Weasel Brook Park to see the ducks and then wander through the nearby woods to pick blackberries and discover flowers such as asters and blue-eyed grass. We would walk to see the sheep grazing less than a mile from where we lived. If we heard fire engines, we would walk to where they were going, no matter what time of day or night it was.

We moved to Prospect Park and there we walked up by the quarry to catch tadpoles in the spring. We didn’t have a car until I was ready to enter high school and I find that I am thankful for that because of the time spent together walking to the store, to church and to visit friends. And yes, my loooong walk to school was only 0.3 mile!

When we moved to Wayne we had a car, but still walked to the areas around Dey Mansion. And then I “grew up” and moved to Washington State. However, my love of walking in the woods intensified and when Dad would visit, we still did that together, continuing to talk about plants and identifying those that we could.

Most recently I would take him in his wheelchair to walk up to a small wooded area near his health care center. This cache is placed in the spot near I last sat and talked to him, still discussing things like the acorns, squirrels, and the beauty of the surroundings.

And – my favorite caches will always be those that take me on a walk in the woods.
