Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the very large Newport News City Park off Jefferson Ave.. Park in the campground & fishing area parking lot, and start your hunt from there.

This cache is a very large ammo can that is well hidden, but in a very easy walking area. Be carefully of people in the area who are either fishing or going camping. Because there were many trees obstructing my GPS, the Waypoints might be off slightly, but your pointer should take you directly to it. The contents include my Travel Bug - "The Galloping Horse" and some other interesting items plus a notepad and pen. Please replace the cache exactly as found because it was the only hiding spot in that area. Also stop to read the Historical Marker as you come into the parking area about John Magruder. He was a 1830 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. At the beginning of the Civil War, he resigned his commission as a Colonel in the U.S. Army, and accepted a commmision in the Confederate Army. He was commander of the Confederate troops who defeated the Union Army at the Battle of Big Bethel, the first land engagement in the war. This battle was fought in present day Hampton. After this engagement, he constructed a line of defensive fortications from the York River to the James River known as Magruder's Line of Defense. They included 18 forts, many of which are still in the woods untouched since the war. After the war, Magruder lived in Mexico, and later died in Texas. Try to visit some of the trenches in this area. Just ask the park rangers in the office building where they are located. Enjoy this park.
